Grit, Flow and your line

Do you know what an asymptote line is? It’s a curve on a graph that starts vertically but curves around in a never-‐ ending attempt to reach a completely horizontal path. The thing is, asymptote lines never reach the horizontal. So why does this weird line with a funny spelling have anything to do with anything? Because they can teach us about learning and mastery.

Many believe that our journey to mastery is never-‐ending. Like an asymptote line and its effort to achieve horizontal, mastery will always be just out of reach. Should we not try then? Should we give in and accept a lesser achievement? Of course not! We should learn as we go, and pay attention to the way others do it. Our most heroic role models are a great example.

What traits are similar in every successful Navy SEAL candidate? Intelligence? Talent? Athleticism? None of the above. The first is grit. The outstanding effort in the face of incredible odds. The mindset that won’t let them fail. Grit. You have it. Embrace it. A second shared trait is flow: a state of mind that allows for fun and the pleasure of learning something interesting. These two attributes, grit and flow, are found in most high-‐achievers, pro athletes, successful businessmen.

Enjoy your ride along your asymptote line. And don’t forget about grit and flow. Have a great day! Love dad
