Get In the Habit

Why is our life governed by habits?

Both good and bad we are creatures of habit. These predictable patterns allow us to cope with stress and establish our legacy.

Bad habits are a reaction to stress. If left unattended, they can turn into addiction. Bad habits point us inward and give us a selfish view of the world -‐ smoking, eating poorly, drinking too much, gambling, spending an inordinate amount of time on our mobile device; it’s all about ‘what I deserve’. In the end, bad habits make us less than we can be. We end up angry, discontent and miserable, believing that no one understands us. We focus on our pain rather than our joy.

Good habits point us outward, show us how to improve and help us become a model for others. These proclivities eventually reveal honorable things: living a life of gratitude, loving others and being generous with our time. We become less judgmental, more forgiving.

Good habits are harder to maintain than bad habits, but their upside is tremendous, highly beneficial. Good habits make us all we can be, but they take effort to start. Bad habits are based on comfort. Good habits are based on progress and a desire to be better. The choice is yours. Today, start with one good thing that takes you out of your comfort zone – like a random act of kindness for someone you don’t know.

Try a new activity, change your old routine. While you might not see the result right away, I promise this behavior will change your life. Have a wonderful day! I’m proud of you! Love dad
