Going against the flow

Have you ever asked yourself why salmon spend a good portion of their lives swimming upstream? Why spend the energy fighting against the current? Why take two steps forward only to be pushed one step back, every time? Why challenge the direction of the more powerful rapids? It’s fascinating to think that something so strong, a pull so great would compel these fish to defy the odds and head for familiar ground. No matter where they are, there’s a time in their lives and an instinct that drives them back to the comfort of home. This is where they spawn, lay eggs and watch the next generation start.

Every creature has a sense of home. All of God’s creation desires to be in a place that’s familiar and safe. What can we learn from the salmon’s great effort and drive? That our desire to be surrounded by familiarity and have a sense of home gives us purpose. That family, friends and the native surroundings are more than just a figment of our imagination, they are real, tangible and compelling. Our drive is stronger than the current pushing against us. It’s a drive so powerful, it has us leaping over boulders, navigating through deep waters, swimming through areas so restrictive we can hardly breathe. Yes, it’s that strong. Home gives us a place where we can be ourselves and find meaning. We do our best when we find home. You will always have a home with us. And whenever you feel the need, you’re welcome to swim back -‐ even if it feels like your going upstream, the journey will be worth it. We’ll be here, ready, with open arms. I’m proud of you.

Swim strong today! Love dad
